What is Wengen skiing like?
Wengen skiing is excellent, especially for intermediates. With heaps of long, scenic runs across the 211km Jungfrau Region and links to Grindelwald and Mürren, it offers plenty for beginners, seasoned skiers, and even non-skiers to get stuck into.
Is Wengen ski resort snow-sure?
What are the snow conditions like at Wengen ski resort?
Set upon a southwest-facing mountain terrace, Wengen is sheltered and bathed in glorious sunshine most of the ski season. Sunnies on!
This does mean that the snow can be a bit temperamental at lower altitudes, but there are plenty of runs higher up the mountain to play on, and lots of snow cannons keep the main slopes topped up.
When’s the best time to book a Wengen ski holiday?
- February offers Wengen’s best snow conditions and the perfect family trip courtesy of the half-term break. In addition, Wengen’s dazzling Snow Shows happen during February - expect jaw-dropping tricks, floodlit processions, and fireworks. Boomtastic!
- March offers longer days, spring sunshine, and great powder - ideal for groups, couples, and solo skiers looking to escape the crowds.
- In January, tens of thousands of spectators arrive to watch the International Lauberhorn Race - the longest downhill Ski World Cup.
Is Wengen good for beginner ski holidays?
Yes. Wengen has dedicated nursery slopes right in the centre of the village, as well as some excellent “slow slopes” for those just getting started at Kleine Scheidegg.
What’s more, with its convenient modern lift systems, car-free streets, and excellent ski schools, it’s got a great atmosphere for those new to the slopes and looking for a quiet, friendly spot to learn the ropes.
Is Wengen ski resort a good pick for a family ski trip?
Yes. Wengen is an excellent choice for families. With its car-free streets — you can only reach it by train — children can run around freely. The atmosphere is relaxed and quiet; there are excellent ski schools for lessons, plenty of family-friendly hotels and restaurants, and the "Männlichen Children’s World" is a top-tier learning area for honing those snow pizzas to perfection.
Are Wengen ski trips good for expert and advanced skiers?
Yes. Though definitely a good pick for cruisy intermediates who love their blues and reds, there’s still plenty on offer for more experienced black run seekers on Wengen’s pistes.
We recommend checking out the Lauberhorn Downhill, the world’s longest World Cup run, or the "Black Rock" run in the Kleine Scheidegg/Männlichen ski area, which is well-known for its steep, demanding gradient.
Are Wengen ski holidays good for non-skiers?
This is thanks to its famous mountain railway, which allows non-skiers to meet friends for lunch at the top easily, and miles of groomed winter hiking trails and sledging runs to help keep you well entertained while others in the group are off carving their runs.
Is Wengen ski resort linked with any other resorts?
Yes. Wengen is linked via lifts and pistes to neighbouring Grindelwald, and to Mürren via a short train and cable car ride across the valley.

Bern (BRN) is the closest airport to Wengen, with an approximate 90-minute transfer time. Though Zurich (ZRH) and Basel (BSL) are the most common airports for international travellers, with transfer times of around 2-3 hours.
Is Wengen ski resort easy to reach?
Wengen is unique in that it requires a train transfer to reach. From the airport, you either take the road or the rails to Lauterbrunnen, then board a cogwheel train for a 15-minute climb to the village.
